  • Ware County was established on Dec. 15, 1824. It was created from portions of Appling County. Portions of Ware Co. were used to create Clinch(1850), Coffee(1854), Pierce(1857) and Bacon(1914) counties. Becoming Georgia's 60th county, it was named after U.S. Senator Nicholas Ware.

Ware County is a quiet, clean community endowed with friendly citizens who are anxious to please and willing to help make your visit or stay enjoyable. At the heart of Ware County is Waycross, a beautiful small town with exceptional charm. Beneath its rural ambiance beats the heart of a progressive community. Commercially, Ware County is a major transportation hub in the southeast. In addition to hosting the largest switching rail yard on the east coast, Waycross lies at the intersection of major highways and has three airport runways. In a social context, Ware County is a sanctuary for retirees who readily experience the kindness and affection of the community as well as relatively stable, moderate seasonal climate conditions. Moreover, established retirement communities offer some of the best living conditions for senior adults. The medical professionals who serve Waycross and Ware County are outstanding, and with the growth of Satilla Regional Medical Center, citizens in southeast Georgia receive exceptional medical care. Come join us in the “land of the trembling earth”, where the lazy ‘gator suns on the edge of the Okefenokee, and the moss drapes eerily from the tree branches. We invite you to come for a visit and stay for a lifetime.
