Ware County residents elected Steve A. Barnard Sr. to serve as District 4 Commissioner, with an effective date of January 1, 2016. Mr. Barnard is a lifelong resident of Ware County, and is married to the former Marie Steedley. Steve and Marie have four children: Steve Jr. (Amanda), Ginger Carter (Shane), Chuck Griffin (Jena) Shanna Fuge (Dan). They have nine grandchildren all residing in the surrounding area.

Mr. Barnard has devoted most of his adult life serving the citizens of Ware County and the State of Georgia. He has enjoyed a rewarding career in law enforcement. He began his career in 1988, serving under Sheriff H. E. Bond and later Sheriff Ronnie McQuaig until 2005. He was elected to serve as Tax Commissioner of Ware County for two terms leaving office in 2013. He then accepted a position with the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice traveling throughout the State on the Special Operations Team. In November 2015, transferring to the local Waycross Regional Youth Detention Center as a Lieutenant from which he retired August 2017.

Steve has served as a board member and as Vice President of the Waycross Exchange Club. He formerly served as Treasurer at the Waycross Masonic Lodge for many years. Steve and Marie are active members of Pineview Baptist Church in Waresboro GA where he serves as Assistant Sunday School Director. He also sings in the adult choir. He enjoys hunting and fishing and other outdoor activities with his grandchildren in his spare time.
