Chairman Jimmy Brown was born and raised in Ware County. He was educated in the Ware County School System and graduated with the 1964 Ware County High School Class.
Jimmy and his wife, the former Beverly Fern Boatright, are parents of three sons, Jimmy Jr., Dell and Sean, and one daughter, Hope, and now nine Grandchildren, six girls and three boys. Four of the nine are in college at present.
Jimmy was employed by Ware County, as a rookie firefighter on March 7, 1968. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1971. In 1973, he was appointed to the position of Ware County Fire Chief by the Ware County Board of Commissioners. In January 1990 he was appointed and served as Airport Manager as well as his Fire Chief duties.
Chairman Brown has been very active in organizations, including International Association of Fire Chiefs, The National Fire Protection Association, Georgia Association of Fire Chiefs, Georgia State Fireman’s Association, and the Georgia Rural Fire Defense Council where he served the 8th District. He was a member of the Georgia Airport Association. Chairman Brown is a member of the Waycross Exchange Club where he has served on the Board of Directors, Treasurer, and is past President. He also served as the E.M.A. Director following the tragic loss of Jack Hobbs, until a successor was appointed.
Throughout his career, Chairman Brown has received numerous recognitions. Among these recognitions are the Exchange Club Outstanding Service Award, the Erin W. Johnson Trophy, the Exchangite of the Year Award, and the Kiwanis Club A. G. Miller Medal. He received congressional recognition by Congressman Jack Kinston and Safety Fire Commissioner John Oxendine appointed him an Honorary State Fire Marshal. President Georg W. Bush, Senator Saxby Chambliss and Governor Sonny Perdue recognized him for his many years of dedicated service to the citizens of Ware County.
Chairman Brown retired from the Ware County Fire Department on March 7th, 2008 with 40 years to the day of service.
Some 5 ½ years ago he started making plans to enter the political arena. In 2008 he ran for the office of Chairman of the Ware County Board of Commissioners and was successful in being elected. On January 1st, 2009 he was given the Oath of Office, and is serving the people of Ware County as their Chairman of the Ware County Board of Commissioners.
